How To Clean Mould Off A Bathtub

Even with regular cleaning the bathtub can still grow mould as a result of dirt, grime, skin deposits and because of the moisture and humidity in the bathroom. If this occurs then it can make taking a bath a little less attractive, that is why it is important to take measures to get that mould out of there. There are a number of ways that you can do this, so that you will be able to bathe and relax without worrying about the dirty tub.

Let’s take a look at some of the ways that you can get rid of that mould.

Using Vinegar

One of the simplest ways that you can get rid of the mould is to make your very own solution that will help to descale the tub and remove the grime. White vinegar is a brilliant option here, and it doesn’t even need to be diluted in order for it to work. Add vinegar to a spray bottle for easier application and then spray it directly onto the areas of mould. Leave the solution for 20 minutes and then rinse. Vinegar is non-toxic and excellent for lifting the mould off the surface. The smell may not be too pleasant, especially not for a bathroom tub, but it will clear in a couple of hours if you open up the door and the windows.

Borax Approach

Another solution that you can prepare at home is by adding a cup of borax and around 4 liters of water. Borax is a natural fungicide and insecticide that is what makes it the perfect choice to remove mould from the tub. Again we need to add this solution to a spray bottle and then squirt the solution directly onto the affected areas. Unlike vinegar this solution doesn’t need to be rinsed off and it can even prevent any mould from growing in the same area in the future.

Using Bleach

Bleach can certainly be very effective at removing mould from the surface but you should really only use this as a last resort. The reason for this is that it is a very toxic and corrosive liquid that could potentially cause damage to the materials of your bathroom tub. If you must use bleach then mix 1 part of it to 10 parts water and then spray it directly onto the surface. Be sure that you are using gloves when you handle bleach as it can burn the skin. The solution doesn’t need to be rinsed off but you should leave it for 4 or 5 hours before using the tub again.

Accessories

Prior to adding the solution you can wash the affected area with a cleaning cloth and then scrub it with a soft bristled brush. Be sure that you don’t use a wire brush here as it can easily scratch the material of the tub.

The best way that you can prevent mould from growing in the first place is to ensure that you have lots of ventilation in the room as you are taking a shower or freestanding baths, or once you have finished.
